21, 2006, Hong Kong – Over 2,000 AIA representatives and employees
of AIG companies participated in the AIA Foundation Charity Walkathon
today. Raising over HK$1.1 million for various charitable initiatives,
the participants demonstrated their care and concern for the less
fortunate. As an important community event, the Walkathon also celebrated
the 75th Anniversary of AIA .
The kick-off ceremony was officiated by Mr. Frederick Ma, JP, Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury; the Hon. Bernard Chan, JP, Member of Executive Council & Legislative Council; Dr. Eric Li, Senior Partner of Li, Tang, Chen & Co.; Mr. T.C. Cheng, Deputy President of American International Assurance Company, Limited; Mr. Alwin Lam, Executive Vice President of AIA Foundation; Mr. Greg Crichton, Director, Executive Vice President & General Counsel of American International Assurance Company, Limited and Mr. Chris Townsend, President and Managing Director of American International Underwriters, Limited. In addition, Mr. Pang Chung, the Hon. Secretary General of Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China; the two Bronze Medal Winners of the Women's 4x100m Relay at the 2005 East Asian Games, Ms Chan Ho Yee and Ms Leung Shuk Wa; as well as representatives of various charitable organizations were also there to support this worthwhile charitable event.
Established in 1995 under the initiative of American International Assurance Company,Limited, AIA Foundation has been devoted to supporting charity organizations and charitable programs . Over the past decade, more than 60 organizations received nearly HK$30 million from the Foundation for worthwhile charitable causes related to education, sports, medical and community services. The Foundation also spearheads its own initiatives, including the Young Leaders Development Program and the AIA Foundation Scholarship, which both aim to nurture the younger generation of Hong Kong. This year, the major charitable events supported by the Foundation include MSF Orienteering Competition, Walk for Nature by WWF Hong Kong.
Mr. Alwin Lam, Executive Vice President of AIA Foundation said, “This fundraising Walkathon is a wonderful way to celebrate AIA’s 75th Anniversary because it marks the achievement of our corporate mission of giving back to the community. Over the past month, our employees have demonstrated their strong team spirit and raised over HK$1.1 million. As the Foundation’s largest ever fundraising event, involving the highest number of participants, the Walkathon sets an important milestone for AIA Foundation.”
The Walkathon began at AIG Tower in Central, continuing on to AIA Building in Wan Chai and AIA Plaza in Causeway Bay before heading towards the final destination at AIA Tower in North Point.
