Organised by AIA Foundation, the “Young Leaders Development Programme” (YLDP) has entered the 20th anniversary of its establishment. More than 470 local university students have participated in the programme in the past years. With the theme of “A Hand to Lead A Vision to Serve”, the 2017/2018 YLDP has trained 14 outstanding local university students in the six-month programme, helping them develop leadership skills and equip themselves to be socially responsible young leaders of tomorrow.
Ms. Bonnie Tse, General Manager, Corporate, Strategy and Wealth Management of AIA Hong Kong & Macau, and Director of AIA Foundation, said, “‘AIA Foundation Young Leaders Development Programme' is our long-running youth development initiative. It was established to nurture the younger generation to become a new force contributing to the development of Hong Kong. By exemplifying our dedication to creating shared value, the programme demonstrates our long-term commitment to the society, economy and people of Hong Kong. We hope to help young people expand their horizons and explore their potential in many facets by providing all-round training, and to contribute our efforts in cultivating more high-calibre next generation human capital for our community.”
To enable students to become “A Hand to Lead”, YLDP provided a series of in-depth and comprehensive training courses to enhance students' leadership skills and provide them with practical job-seeking skills. The diversified curriculum included the “Star Speaker Forum” featuring Mr. Leung Kee Cheong, former Principal of Fresh Fish Traders' School; sharing by two Hong Kong-based coaches from The Premier League team, Tottenham Hotspur, of tips on becoming leaders with healthy bodies; the “Career Workshop” where students learned how to forge a path in life planning; the five-day/four-night “Adventure and Leadership Camp”; “Business Etiquette Training Workshop” and “Job Hunting 101”. “A Vision to Serve” was another core element of YLDP. Students participated in various community services which enabled them to gain a better understanding of the living conditions of the elderly and children with special needs.
Several awards, including the “Outstanding Young Leaders Award”, “My Favourite Young Leader Award” and “Best Local Community Service Award” were presented to recognise students for their excellent performance in the programme. AIA Hong Kong also offered summer internship opportunities to the best performers. Four students received the recognitions in the 2017/2018 programme. Among them, Kyle Chan from The Faculty of Law at The Chinese University of Hong Kong who won three awards, said, “The programme broadened our horizons, helped me build up the courage to accept challenges and learn how to become a distinguished leader.” Ken Choi from the School of Accounting and Finance at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University won the “Best Local Community Service Award”. He said, “YLDP integrated the element of community service into the programme, enabling us to practise what we learnt as well as to give back to the community.”
