Global University Subject Rankings: 6 Subjects in Hong Kong Reach the Top 10

The international higher education information agency, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), has released its World University Rankings by Subject. Six subjects in Hong Kong have ranked in the global top 10, with the University of Hong Kong's (HKU) Dentistry ranking second in the world.

 

A total of 231 subjects from nine institutions in Hong Kong were included in the rankings. Among them, 156 subjects (approximately 68%) are ranked within the global top 100, with 30 subjects placing in the top 20.

 

HKU's Education program rose from 7th place last year to 3rd place this year. Nursing at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is ranked 5th, while Linguistics at HKU and CUHK are ranked 9th and 10th, respectively.

Among the ranked subjects in Hong Kong, 68% (158 subjects) saw an improvement in their rankings, while 6% (13 subjects) recorded a decline.

 

In terms of medical-related subjects, the University of Hong Kong (HKU) Medicine jumped from 37th place last year to 24th, surpassing the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Medicine, which ranked 25th. The nursing programs of three universities also saw their rankings rise, with CUHK ranking the highest at 5th (up 3 places from last year), followed by PolyU at 16th and HKU at 34th.

 

Additionally, in Law, HKU and CUHK rose by 5 and 1 places to rank 15th and 48th, respectively; meanwhile, CityU saw a slight dip of two places, moving from 54th to 56th.

 

Regarding universities globally, U.S. universities hold the world's number one spot in 32 subjects, with Harvard University taking the lead in 19 subjects and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) topping 12 subjects. The United Kingdom has a total of 18 subjects ranked first, with the University of Cambridge securing 4 top spots and the University of Oxford gaining 3.
