Hong Kong's 18 Districts Population Ranking: Which District Has the Highest Population Density?

The Census and Statistics Department has released the 2024 population figures for the 18 districts. Sha Tin District has the largest population in Hong Kong with 704,000 people, followed by Yuen Long District with 677,000 people, and Kwun Tong District with 668,000 people. In terms of population density, Kwun Tong is the most densely populated area with 59,000 people per square kilometer, followed by Sham Shui Po and Wong Tai Sin; meanwhile, areas with lower population density include Islands, Tai Po, and North District.

Wan Chai is the district with the smallest population, with only approximately 164,000 people in 2024. The Islands and Central and Western districts also have smaller populations, at 198,000 and 232,000 people respectively.
 
Looking at population changes across districts from 2015 to 2024, Sha Tin has consistently been the most populous district in Hong Kong for many years. Kwun Tong was previously the second most populous district for a long time until it was overtaken by Yuen Long in 2022.

If comparing the population density of each district, Kwun Tong was the most densely populated area in 2024, with 59,000 people per square kilometer. This was followed by Sham Shui Po, with nearly 47,000 people per square kilometer, and Wong Tai Sin District, with 44,000 people per square kilometer. On the other hand, areas with lower population density included the Islands, Tai Po, and North District.
